I would say that if you were looking for a good starter skate, try out some of the lower-end Riedell speed skates. The 265 boot is very popular with newer skaters, and Riedell is one of my favorite brand as far as derby skates go. I'll try to get a more detailed post out soon complete with pictures and links so you can do a little window-shopping. :D I wouldn't get anything as expensive as the skates that I bought until you've completely dedicated yourself to derby. $100 el cheapo skates are just fine to begin with. I just found your blog b/c I was scouring the web for info on roller derby. I went to a match over a year ago and loved it, but wasn't in a position to try out. I'm moving to Charlotte (NC) soon and planning to go to as many of the CLT Roller Girl's matches as possible.
